Understanding Generational Digital Divides

As the world becomes increasingly digitized, the divide between those who are native to digital technology and those who are immigrants is growing. Born after the turn of the century, so-called digital natives have never known a world without computers, smartphones, and social media. They use technology instinctively and comfortably, while digital immigrants grew up in a world without these things and had to adapt to them later in life.  In this article, we will explain generational digital divides.

This divide can cause tension and misunderstanding.  Digital natives often take for granted the knowledge and skills that come naturally to them. They may not realize that someone who didn’t grow up with technology may not know how to use it as easily or intuitively. Conversely, digital immigrants may feel left behind or even intimidated by all the new technology.

There are ways to bridge this divide, however. By understanding where each group is coming from, we can better communicate and work together. Digital natives can be patient and explain things to those who are less familiar with technology. And digital immigrants can stay curious and open-minded, learning new things alongside the younger generation. Ultimately, we can all benefit from the unique perspectives and knowledge that each group has to offer.

The Divide between Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants Defined

Digital natives are those who were born after the turn of the century, into a world where computers, smartphones, and social media have always existed. They are comfortable with technology and use it instinctively. Meanwhile, digital immigrants are those who were born before the era of digital technology. They had to learn how to use it later in life and often struggle with new gadgets and applications.

The divide between these two groups can cause tension and misunderstanding, as the digital natives take for granted the knowledge that digital immigrants have to work hard to acquire. However, this divide can be overcome by learning from each other. Digital immigrants can learn from digital natives how to use technology. And, digital natives can learn from digital immigrants the importance of face-to-face communication.

Digital natives often take for granted the knowledge that digital immigrants have to work hard to acquire. However, this divide can be overcome by learning from each other. However, despite her comfort level with technology, Paula has a hard time completing some of the digital tasks that are required for her to be successful in school and at work.

For example, Paula finds it difficult to create a PowerPoint presentation or to complete online assignments. In fact, she often struggles to even turn on her computer! This can be frustrating for Paula. She knows that she is falling behind her classmates and coworkers who seem to have no trouble completing these tasks.
